Course Overview

Most 2D animation courses teach you where the buttons are. This one teaches you how to actually build something. At NodeToLearn, you work one-on-one with a mentor on a dedicated workstation — no waiting for a batch, no rushing past concepts you haven't understood yet.

You'll learn to draw and rig characters properly using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Animate, and Adobe After Effects. That means creating character asset sheets, animating frame-by-frame with the classic 12 principles, and rigging a character's bones so it moves naturally — arms, legs, spine, and facial expressions included. You'll also learn how AI tools can speed up parts of the workflow, like auto-generating in-between frames or syncing mouth shapes to a voice track.

The goal by the end is a real animation showreel — not a certificate with nothing behind it. You'll have worked through actual project briefs: a character walk cycle, a short animated promo, a lipsync dialogue clip. These are the kinds of pieces that studios and freelance clients actually ask to see.

This course is best suited for students who are serious about 2D animation as a skill and career path. It is not a crash course. Expect to put in consistent hours, make mistakes, and build something you're genuinely proud of.

Who is this for?

This course is for anyone who wants to move seriously into 2D animation — whether you're a student exploring it for the first time, a graphic designer who wants to add motion to your skillset, or someone who already draws and wants to learn how to bring characters to life on screen. Game asset creators, digital marketers who need animated content, and artists looking to work in cartoon production or motion advertising will also find this directly relevant. You should be comfortable using a computer. Prior drawing experience helps but is not required.

Career Outcomes

  • Completing this course prepares you for roles like 2D Animator
  • Character Rigging Artist
  • Motion Graphics Artist
  • Storyboard Designer
  • and Cartoon Content Producer — in animation studios
  • digital agencies
  • or as a freelance animator.

Course Curriculum

Module 1: Character Design & Vector Asset Building (Adobe Illustrator)

  • Setting up your workspace for animation: canvas sizes, pixel grid, and web vs. broadcast dimensions
  • Drawing clean vector characters: creating separate body parts on isolated layers for easy rigging later
  • Building multi-angle character sheets (front, side, 3/4 view) and matching prop assets
  • Establishing a consistent color palette: skin tones, background environments, and global colour styles
  • Exporting assets correctly: layer naming, anchor point placement, and clean SVG/EPS file hand-off

Module 2: Frame-by-Frame Animation & Timeline Control (Adobe Animate)

  • Understanding the 12 Principles of Animation: squash and stretch, anticipation, follow-through, arcs — applied to your own characters
  • Working with the timeline: blank keyframes, frame rates, and nested symbols (Graphic, Movie Clip, Button)
  • Creating smooth movement: shape tweens, classic tweens, custom easing curves, and onion skin tools
  • Animating shape morphing: using shape hints to control how one shape transforms into another
  • Lipsync basics: matching mouth shapes to a voice track frame by frame inside the Animate timeline

Module 3: Skeletal Rigging & Character Motion (Adobe After Effects)

  • Setting up a puppet rig: placing mesh pins on a character so body parts bend and move naturally
  • Building bone chains for arms and legs using Inverse Kinematics (IK) — so moving a foot automatically moves the whole leg
  • Rigging facial controls: joystick-style controllers for eye movement, head rotation, and expressions
  • Creating walk cycles, parallax scrolling backgrounds, and secondary motion like hair and clothing bounce
  • Adding impact physics: weight, overlap, and settle — making movement feel physically believable

Module 4: AI-Assisted Animation Tools & Workflow Speed

  • Using text-to-vector AI tools to quickly sketch out character silhouettes and layout ideas
  • Cleaning up voice recordings with AI audio tools inside Adobe Audition for clear dialogue sync
  • Using AI lipsync plugins to automatically map a voice track to matching mouth shape frames
  • Generating in-between frames automatically with AI interpolation to smooth out animation
  • Understanding where AI tools save time — and where manual control still produces better results

Module 5: Storyboarding, Showreel Assembly & Freelance Readiness

  • Drafting a visual storyboard: thumbnail panels, camera framing (close-up, pan, parallax cuts), and scene pacing
  • Building your final showreel: assembling a short animated promo, a character lipsync clip, and a walk cycle into one portfolio piece
  • Handling a client brief: understanding project scope, revision rounds, and basic file delivery standards
  • Freelance positioning: setting up a portfolio, pricing your work, and what technical interviews for studio roles typically ask
